Quick fact about PDF

PDF is a final-format document — it's designed for reading, not editing. Converting to DOCX extracts the text, images, and layout into an editable Word document. Best results with text-based PDFs (not scans).

Why convert PDF to DOCX?

PDFs are ideal for sharing — they look identical everywhere — but they're hard to edit. When you need to modify a PDF's content (update text, change an image, reformat a section), converting to DOCX gives you an editable Word document. Our converter extracts text with its formatting, preserves images and tables, and reconstructs the layout as closely as possible.

Technical details

Input format PDF (text-based)
Output format DOCX (Word 2007+)
Text extraction Full with formatting
Images Extracted at embedded resolution
Tables Detected and reconstructed
Engine LibreOffice headless
Max file size 50 MB per file
File retention Auto-deleted after conversion

How the conversion works

The converter analyzes the PDF structure, extracts text runs, images, and layout information, then rebuilds the document as a DOCX file using LibreOffice's headless engine. Text is preserved with font, size, and style information. Images are extracted at their embedded resolution. Tables are detected and reconstructed.

When to convert PDF to DOCX

Quality considerations

PDF → DOCX conversion quality depends heavily on the source. Text-based PDFs (created from Word, Google Docs, etc.) convert very well. Scanned PDFs (image-based) require OCR first — our converter extracts images but does not OCR text. Complex layouts (multi-column, magazines) may need manual cleanup.

Common problems and fixes

Output DOCX has garbled text
The PDF is likely a scanned image. Run OCR first (Adobe Acrobat, Tesseract, or online OCR tools), then convert.
Images are missing
Some PDFs embed images in unusual ways. Try a different PDF or extract images separately.
Layout is different from the PDF
PDF is a fixed-layout format; DOCX is reflowable. Complex layouts (multi-column, magazines) may need manual cleanup.
Fonts look different
The PDF used fonts not available on the conversion server. The output uses metric-compatible substitutes.
