HEIC files are typically 40–50% smaller than an equivalent-quality JPG — the primary reason Apple adopted HEIC as the default iPhone camera format starting with iOS 11 in 2017.
HEIC is Apple's proprietary image format based on HEVC compression. It saves storage on iPhones by shrinking photos 40–50% compared to JPG, but the format is not natively supported by most Windows applications, older Adobe software, Android devices, or many web platforms. Converting HEIC to JPG ensures your photos open natively everywhere — email clients, social media, Windows Photos, Android gallery apps, and legacy photo editors.
| Attribute | HEIC | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Container | HEIF (ISO/IEC 23008-12) | JFIF / EXIF (JPEG stream) |
| Compression algorithm | HEVC (H.265 intra-frame) | Discrete Cosine Transform (lossy) |
| Typical file size | 40–50% smaller than JPG | Baseline reference |
| Alpha channel | Supported in HEIF container | Not supported |
| Compatibility | iOS 11+, macOS High Sierra+, recent Windows 10+ | Universal — 99%+ of devices and browsers |
| Metadata support | Rich (EXIF, XMP, depth maps, live photos) | EXIF and XMP (no depth/live) |
| Input formats | HEIC, HEIF |
| Output format | JPG (JPEG) |
| Compression | Lossy (JPEG at 92% quality) |
| Transparency | Not preserved (JPG has no alpha channel) |
| Max file size | 50 MB per file |
| Batch processing | Supported (multiple files per session) |
| EXIF metadata | Preserved by default |
| Processing location | Server-side (cloud) |
| File retention | Auto-deleted after conversion |
The converter decodes the HEVC-compressed image container, extracts the primary image stream, and re-encodes it as a JPEG using libjpeg at 92% quality. EXIF metadata (camera, date, GPS) is preserved unless stripped. Transparency (rare in HEIC photos) is composited onto a white background because JPG does not support alpha channels.
JPG output uses 92% quality, which is visually lossless for screen viewing and photo printing up to A3 size. HEIC-to-JPG conversion is a decode-then-encode operation: some quality loss is unavoidable because both formats use lossy compression. At 92% quality, the difference is not perceptible under normal viewing conditions.
