AVIF is 50% smaller than JPG and typically 5-10x smaller than PNG for photographs — while preserving transparency. Converting PNG to AVIF keeps alpha channels intact while dramatically reducing file size.
PNG is lossless and supports transparency — great for logos and design assets, but wasteful for photos and screenshots. AVIF is the newest format, based on AV1 codec, and typically produces files 5-10x smaller than PNG for photographs while still preserving alpha channels. If you're delivering images over the web, converting PNG to AVIF dramatically reduces bandwidth costs and improves page load times without sacrificing quality or transparency.

The converter decodes the PNG image and re-encodes it as AVIF using libavif at 85% quality. AV1-based compression is much more efficient than PNG's lossless DEFLATE, producing files 5-10x smaller for photos. PNG's 8-bit alpha channel is preserved as AVIF's alpha channel, so transparency survives the conversion.
AVIF output uses 85% quality — visually indistinguishable from the source PNG at normal viewing distances. For photographs, the compression is dramatic (5-10x smaller). For screenshots and text-heavy images, compression is more modest and slight softening may occur. Transparency is fully preserved, making AVIF excellent for logos and UI assets.
