HEIC files are typically 40-50% smaller than the equivalent JPG. Converting JPG to HEIC can reclaim gigabytes of storage on an iPhone or Mac — at the cost of reduced compatibility outside Apple's ecosystem.
If you have a large library of JPG photos taking up space, HEIC's HEVC-based compression can cut your storage footprint by 40-50% with no visible quality loss. This is especially useful for iPhone and Mac users who want to reclaim space, since macOS and iOS have native HEIC support. Note that HEIC is not natively supported on Windows, Android, older browsers, or legacy software — so JPG-to-HEIC is a storage optimization play, not a compatibility play. Use it when you know your destination (iPhone, iPad, Mac, iCloud) supports HEIC.

The converter decodes the JPG image and re-encodes it using the HEVC (H.265) codec inside an HEIF container. Typical output is 40-50% smaller than the source JPG at the same visual quality. EXIF metadata (camera, GPS, timestamp) is preserved. Transparency is not applicable to JPG input, so HEIC output from JPG never has an alpha channel.
HEIC uses HEVC-based compression which is significantly more efficient than JPG's DCT. The output is visually indistinguishable from the source JPG at normal viewing conditions while being 40-50% smaller. Some minor quality loss is unavoidable because both formats are lossy, but at typical viewing distances the difference is not perceptible. For archival of critical photos, keep the original JPG — converting to HEIC is a one-way compression.
