BMP is uncompressed — a HEIC photo becomes roughly 30-50x larger as BMP. But BMP is supported by every Windows application since 1990, including legacy industrial and government software that no longer receives updates.
BMP is one of the oldest image formats still in active use. It stores images uncompressed, which makes files very large but guarantees universal compatibility — even with software released before the year 2000. When you need to open a HEIC photo in legacy Windows software, industrial control panels, government systems, or very old photo editors, BMP is often the only format that works.

The converter decodes the HEVC-compressed HEIC image and writes it as an uncompressed BMP (24-bit or 32-bit). No lossy re-encoding occurs — the decoded pixels are preserved exactly. The file size grows significantly (typically 30-50x the source HEIC) because BMP does not compress.
BMP output is lossless at the pixel level — the decoded HEIC image is written uncompressed, so no additional quality loss occurs beyond what was already in the source. This makes BMP ideal for workflows where quality must be preserved exactly and file size is not a concern.
